The corbelled baloconies of Noto, Sicily. Take your pick: lions, horses, chubby faced cherubs, equally cubby faced maidens, strange bunch of blokes or your basic baroque scroll? #architecture #baroque #italy #noto #sicily #balcony

Cathedral of Syracuse, The Temple of Athena, imbedded in a Byzantine church, extended in the Middle Ages and topped off with a Baroque facade! The fine details on the Doric capitals, so delicate, and well preserved by its near continuous occupation. #temple #athena #baroque #cathedral #resuse #imbedded

Wonderful LOQUAT fruit growing wild near the beach. Best in May – a new taste sensation for me – totally delicious. #wildfruit #sicily #loquat #delicious #tastesensation

Far from any town, deep in the Sicilian countryside, we found,in two places, trees which have been carefully imbedded (theme of the week?) into drystone walls. #sicily #olive #imbedded #humanintervention #drystonewall

A day in Porto visiting our joiners there. Working in solid castaña (chestnut). This is a hidden extra work surface in a kitchen unit. #joinery #chestnut #woodworking #porto #craftmanship

To work with craftsmen who understand material and engage in debate over details (even through an architect/translator/friend) is one of the great privileges of being an architect. Working in solid castaña (chestnut).#joinery #chestnut #woodworking #porto #craftmanship

A Heron Halo! A few shots from the PATRICK HERON opening at Tate St Ives last night. For years we tested our models of the gallery by installing scaled down Herons throughout. Now it they are full size…and their colours are amazing. Also lovely to see our benches designed for the gallery in place (woven on the harbour in Penzance). #stives #tate #tatestives #modernart #gallery #contemporaryart #contemporaryarchitecture #art #loveart #architecture #museumoftheyear

Wonderful morning at Eagles Nest, the family home of Patrick Heron, being carefully restored by his daughters Kate and Susanna. It’s setting on an escarpment overlooking the coast gave me the feeling at times as if the house were flying over the landscape below. The gardens weave between vast granite outcrops and heavy low-branched pines. Thank you Kate and Susanna for your hospitality and encouragement this past decade with our project. #house #patrickheron #contemporaryart #modernart #artist #artisthouse #studio #home #garden #zennor #cornwall #stives #tate #tatestives

A big thank you to the TATE ST IVES team for the tremendous effort made to bring daylight into the galleries, carefully controlled and monitored to ensure some fragile works are protected but bathing the exhibit in the St Ives light that Patrick Heron so loved. Great work @annebarlow7 @matsonsara and Andrew Wilson. #stives #tate #tatestives #modernart #gallery #contemporaryart #contemporaryarchitecture #art #loveart #architecture #museumoftheyear #patrickheron

Architettura, in a fresco by Zelotti in the VILLA EMO by Palladio. She is (obviously) a woman. It’s only taken 500 years for this to become a reality. #womaninarchitecture #architecture #fresco #zenotti

So great to see the Brion Cemetery by CARLO SCARPA again today. (The last time was in 1984!). The calm garden and rough concrete in contrast to the infinite detail and brief moments of rich materiality. #scarpa #carloscarpa #brioncemetery #concrete #detail #garden #italy #veneto

Detail study of the stairs of the Brion Cemetery by CARLO SCARPA, designed and built from 1968-1978. Ingenious, playful and definitely crafted (though lacking our present concern for access). #scarpa #carloscarpa #brioncemetery #concrete #detail #garden #italy #veneto #stairs #details #architecturedetails #concrete

A detail study of the hinges of the Brion Cemetery by CARLO SCARPA, designed and built from 1968-1978. Working with craftsmen to make each piece a visual element in the architecture. Never off-the-shelf. #scarpa #carloscarpa #brioncemetery #concrete #detail #garden #italy #veneto #hinge #details #ironmongry #architecturedetails #concrete

1/3 Hi, I’m @jamiefobert . As guest curator of #architecturefriday, I’ve chosen to explore the pivotal role of materials in the making of our architecture, starting with STONE, that most ancient building material.

Travertine Stair, 2015: This stair was carved from 9 blocks of solid grey travertine, quarried near Sienna, Italy. The structure relies on the interlocking blocks resting and cantilevering off each other, allowing it to soar.
