Out of the Ordinary

The Project

A collaboration between the V&A and The Craft Council, ‘Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft’ was the inaugural exhibition in the V&A’s Porter Gallery, a space opened in 2007 to exhibit contemporary art.
The exhibition, which ran from November 2007 to February 2008, featured the works of eight contemporary artists who placed craft at the heart of their practice, transforming ordinary materials—paper, thread, dust and nails—into extraordinary artworks. Responding to the character of the art pieces, the exhibition design comprised cast plaster blacks, in their own right beautiful craftworks, stacked to form walls within the space. The blocks mapped out territories for each of the eight artists. They were neutral in tone and abstract in form yet also had a certain strong presence within the gallery space.
